I was pleasantly surprised by The Hurt Locker's wins last night at the Oscars! Surprised

It had a few major obstacles against it during the awards show and yet it triumphed in spite of them! It didn't feature any big-name stars, it failed to earn a huge fortune at the box office (unlike Avatar), and most disturbing; it was a film that dealt with the Iraq war.

Those also weren't its only obstacles as there were claims that said the movie was grossly inaccurate, that the story was stolen from the exploits of an actual bomb disposal expert, and even the producer being barred from the Academy Awards' show because of his e-mails!

I also found it amusing that an ex-wife's film was squared off against her ex-husband's film in so many categories during the awards' show! Laughing

It was nice to see Kathryn Bigelow make history as the first female director to win Best Director in the show's 82-year history! Cool

What did you think of this year's Oscars? Confused

I couldn't watch the Oscars because I don't get ABC but I wasn't surprised at all by The Hurt Locker winning. It was the favorite to win and I knew for a fact Avatar wouldn't win. The big blockbuster movies almost never win. A lot of money for a movie means nothing when it comes to the Oscars.

At least Avatar won for visual effects as I predicted. I also predicted Sandra Bullock and Jeff Bridges would win and also Kathryn Bigelow. I didn't know of any other nominations since I couldn't watch the freaking show!

I wouldn't agree with that based on the past decade of Best Picture winners. There have been at least SEVEN movies out of the ten that earned over $200 million:

Gladiator earned over $450 million!

A Beautiful Mind and Chicago earned over $300 million.

Lord of the Rings:The Return of the King earned over a BILLION dollars!

Million Dollar Baby earned over $200 million.

The Departed earned over $280 million.

Slumdog Millionaire earned over $370 million!

I should have said that the big box office, action/adventure/fantasy/sci-fi type movies almost never win. The Lord of the Rings deserved the Oscars it got because it was just simply amazing.

The big action/adventure/fantasy/sci-fi money makers that didn't win best picture or didn't get nominated...

- Star Wars - 460,935,665

- Jaws - 260,000,000

- E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial - 434,949,459

- Raiders of the Lost Ark - 242,374,454

- Spider-Man 2 - 373,377,893

- Star Wars: Return of the Jedi - 309,125,409

- Jurassic Park -356,784,000

- King Kong (2005) - 218,051,260

- The Dark Knight - 533,316,061

- Avatar - 722,207,106

- Up - 292,979,556

Agreed; the Oscars never meant anything to me. And with the apparent highlight being the "Lady Kanye" incident, seems like they're headed down the road to "complete and total joke" (if they haven't already gotten there yet).

Her name is Elinor Burkett. Unlike Kanye West; her name was indeed in the winners listed for Documentary Short Subject. I even rewatched the award speech in question here:

The line clearly says Roger Ross Williams, Elinor Burkett at the 26-second mark of the video. Even the announcer mentions Elinor Burkett's name when Roger was running towards the stage.

This is in direct contrast to Kanye West who was never up for the award for Best Female Video in the first place! Rolling Eyes
