Coldplay are a British alternative rock band. Formed in London in 1997, the group comprises Chris Martin (lead vocals, keyboards, guitar), Jonny Buckland (lead guitar), Guy Berryman (bass guitar), and Will Champion (drums, backing vocals, other instruments).
Coldplay's early material was compared to acts such as Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, U2, and Travis. They achieved worldwide fame with the release of the single "Yellow", followed by their debut album, Parachutes (2000), which was nominated for the Mercury Prize.
It won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 2002, and has earned the band various accolades since its release. Parachutes is number 12 on the list of the 20 biggest-selling albums of the 21st century in the United Kingdom. The album won Best British Album at the 2001 Brit Awards.
The band's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), won multiple awards, including NME's Album of the Year. It won the 2003 Grammy for Best Alternative Album for the second time in a row, successive to their previous win in the same category and the 2004 Grammy for Record of the Year for the song "Clocks".
Their next release, X&Y (2005), received a slightly less enthusiastic yet still generally positive reception. The album has been considered a landmark achievement of the band, topping many charts worldwide, including the United Kingdom and United States, the latter being their first. With accumulated sales of over 10 million units, X&Y is the best-selling album released in 2005 worldwide.
The band's fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), was produced by Brian Eno and released again to largely favourable reviews, earning several Grammy nominations and wins including Rock Album of the Year. As of December 2009, the album has sold over 8.1 million copies worldwide, and has become the most paid-for downloaded album of all time. Coldplay have sold over 50 million records worldwide.
Since the release of their first studio album in 2000, Coldplay has been nominated for 122 awards and has won 43 of them including 20 Grammy nominations and 7 Grammy wins. Coldplay also has created some of the greatest piano riffs ever.
Coldplay aren't just a very successfull band, they are also very talented. Here are the different instruments they can play.....
- Chris Martin: piano, guitar, mandolin, clarinet, harmonica
- Jonny Buckland: guitar, keyboard, bass guitar, mandolin, lute, percussion, organ, piano
- Guy Berryman: bass guitar, piano, keyboard, guitar, drums, mandolin
- Will Champion: drums, piano, violin, guitar, bass guitar, banjo, synthesiser, tin whistle
All 4 band members can also sing.

I'm not trying to say that Coldplay will have the same legacy as The Beatles and be just as great but I do think they will end up having a big legacy of their own. Their music is so creative and their lyrics are so great as well.
The group have also performed at various charity projects such as Band Aid 20, Live 8, Sound Relief, Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief, and the Teenage Cancer Trust. They are rich and famous now but haven't let that change them one bit.
Their music is not for everyone of course but I really love this band and want to know what others think of them.

Whilst i appreciate they are good at what they do and those that like that kind of music will obviously think they are great, but for me Coldplay music is just too depressing!

They do have their share of sad songs but a lot of their songs are mean't to be uplifting and happy. Some songs may sound sad but if you read the lyrics, some of them are actually not as sad as you may think.

Most of my post is from wikipedia, to save me some time. who cares if most of it is copied? I'm sure I'm not the only person in the world to do this. What you said is wrong. I guess you can't appreciate good musicians when you see one. You didn't have to be so harsh about it. That was just uncalled for. I try to be nice to people on this website. I don't understand what I ever did to you.

DA BOMB I guess you didn't bother to read my entire post. I NEVER SAID COLDPLAY IS JUST LIKE THE BEATLES!!!
Read my post!!!! It's not that hard.
It's a fact that Coldplay is a great band, 3 of their 4 albums won rock album of the year at the Grammy's, AND I'M NOT JUST GOING BY THAT.
This is the problem with people these days, when a great music artist or band comes along, most people don't realize it because they aren't a 60's or 70's band. Back then it was so easy for people to call someone great but nowadays it is nearly impossible for a band to get the credit they deserve. I guess it was a big mistake posting this topic.
Maybe I just won't post any new topics anymore since nobody understands anything I talk about.
Sorry for ranting and everything but I just don't understand this new generation of poeple and I am only 24 year old,. Wish I was in the 70's I guess instead of dealing with this new generation of people who don't appreciate great music when they hear it.
Why bother to reply to my topic if you don't like Coldplay???

Destroyer, you really need to calm down. DA BOMB, and I quoted his post above, didn't say they were just like the Beatles. He said, and I quote, "They aren't as popular as the Beatles....and won't have the same legacy". Further, he said, and I quote "I think Coldplay is great...".
You need to slow down and read the post before making accusations such as this.

Sorry ICBM I mean no harm, maybe I got too worked up because of Lonny's post. I apologize to DA BOMB, but he did say that Coldplay isn't as popular as The Beatles and won't have the same legacy when I never stated that in the first place. Nobody can argue with that.

| i totally agree with you destoyer...coldplay is great and above all they are talented, that isnt the most common thing in music these days...a lot of bands can sing and dance or whatever, but coldplay as you wrote in your first post can play an unbelievable variety of instruments and play them incredible....they have made their mark on the music industry and will continue to do so |

| coldplay is a solid band at best. the scientist and clocks are their best songs. and regarding their legacy, i dont think their legacy when all is said and done will sniff the legacy of the beatles. |
