|
|
3 or 4 days ago I noticed when typing forum posts there seemed to be a (very very nice, from what little I saw!) spell checker, which would put a wavy red line under any misspelt word as I typed.
I'd never seen the likes before - but a day or two later it stopped again.
I assure you I NEVER get spelling/typing correct first time, so don't blame me - it's vanished !
Is there some option somewhere to turn it on/off, or was it just a sneaky trial for some reason.
(Did any others notice it ?) |

Lol weird, it's always on for me..
It usually depends on the browser I think, it's like this for me at most other sites as well. |

Aha!
Well thank you for that, Killer.
Indeed I WAS using a couple of different browsers for a while recently.
I've now confirmed it DOES work fine in my Google Chrome, but NOT in my normal (Firefox-based) Flock browser.
I'll investigate further. (Hate 2 b missing out on something so nice!) |

| Yes. My Google Chrome is working fine with the spell checker too. My Internet is down but Google Chrome still seems to work perfectly. |

That's absurd, fshk.
If your "internet is down" then there's no way you can be posting here.
Or to put in another way, as you HAVE posted here, your internet is NOT "down".
So - what's the story, eh ? |

| I get some hints from Firefox, with a little dotted red underline. Sure is handy, and much better to implement in the browser rather than on each site. |

Well. When I open my internet explorer it gives me a report of something and tells me to send report. I send it and it shuts the internet down. My Google Chrome works fine. Connection is fine. |

Yep, the spell checker is a nice feature. I find it is quite useful most of the time although like all spell checkers; it does have its weaknesses. |

A bit of a segue here, but hey, something still doesn't add up. I think we are speaking different languages !!?
"it shuts the internet down" and "connection is fine" seems to be the problem I think. To most I believe "the internet" is THE SAME as "the connection", in other words, your INTERNET CONNECTION. Either it's on and you ARE online, or it's dropped or broken or off or whatever in which case you can't be online.
I suspect that "IE ... shuts the internet down" is probably not true, it just shuts ITSELF - i.e. that browser on your computer - down, but doesn't do anything at all to your internet connection. (Sure it breaks the "connection" between itself and the internet, but so does any browser of course when the browser closes).
Does THAT sound correct, just so we DO all understand each other ? |

Hmm by the way, sometimes specific sites get stuck like that, so be sure to check several sites on IE if possible though I guess that's not the problem.
Just reinstall IE. |

Back to the original topic, I thank all those - Killer, Khelos, AB, GaryOak - who helped me solve it. (Khelos, I don't think mine has any connection to MSWord, so I assume it's all built right into the browser.)
I've always eschewed Spell Checkers, and normally when I configure a new browser I automatically turn them off, along with all the other customisations I go thru. I'd done that years ago with my Flock/Firefox, and never gave it a thought again till I happened to use a new browser and saw it happening.
Well, since then I've turned it ON (in all my browsers) and am just LOVING how quietly simple and unobtrusive it is, yet instantly catches 99.9% of my AB typos, while only very rarely giving false positives. I really LOVE it!!
BTW, for Neeraffa or anyone else using Firefox, you find the setting at: TOOLS - OPTIONS - ADVANCED - then on the GENERAL tab is Check my spelling as I type.
Turn on or off at your leisure. |

Eagle. Here is what it tells me. I keep trying to fix it but nothing changes.
An unhandled exception occurred in 3rd party mode module and will be closed. You may send an automatic report created to development centre for further investigation. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
I'm not well with computers so I have no idea what it means but when I click send report it closes the Internet. Google Chrome is perfectly fine. |
