I like 80's music a lot too, but I think my parents must have stuck to the mainstream stations, 'cause half of the 80's songs that are popular these days, I have no memory of hearing them as a kid. And I was born in 1976. I remember stuff like Hall & Oates, Air Supply, Phil Collins (Seriously, LAND OF CONFUSION! Even Disturbed liked it enough to do a remake). But "99 Luftballoons"? First time I ever heard it in my life was 1995, on the "Big 80's" show on VH-1. Same with "Come On Eileen", "I Melt With You" and all that other circus music as I call it. I don't have the same attachment to it, yet I can't seem to figure out why I don't remember those songs and yet I do remember "The Voice" by the Moody Blues, "All I Need" by Jack Wagner, "We Don't Talk Anymore" by Cliff Richard, "Head Over Heels" by Tears For Fears. To me, THAT was the 80's. Maybe they had alternative back then too and certain stations just didn't play it. I don't know.
