Jorge Jesus’ Benfica side have themselves right back in the hunt for a place in the last 16 of the Champions League as Olympique Lyonnais, who only needed a point to qualify, were beaten 4-3, though the three late OL strikes give them the head-to-head edge over the Portuguese should the sides finish equal on points.
A dream first half for the hosts had them three goals to the good thanks to strikes from Alan Kardec, Fabio Coentrao and Javi Garcia, all of which were assisted by Carlos Martins. Coentrao struck again after the break, but Lyon rallied in the final 15 minutes with goals from Yoann Gourcuff, Bafetimbi Gomis and Dejan Lovren.
The floodgates opened with 20 minutes on the clock when a free kick from Martins was expertly headed into the net by Kardec.
Twelve minutes later the Aguias has a second, brilliantly punishing some woefully sloppy play from OL. Miralem Pjanic’s dangerously positioned free kick was hopelessly dumped against the wall, and then Dejan Lovren instantaneously gave away possession to allow Benfica a four-on-two break. Executed at speed, the Portuguese club tore into the French side, with Martins’ lovely lofted pass to Coentrao superbly volleyed beyond Lloris, though replays showed the left-back to have strayed marginally offside.
By this stage there was no stopping Jorge Jesus’ men, who found a third goal to cap off an excellent 45 minutes when Lloris was beaten to Martins’ corner by Javi Garcia. |

Every one is every care
Every time is every sign
Every high is every good-bye

Maybe baby you really, really, really want some
Pop...Sound...Star
Outside
It's all maybe, baby you want some
It's all maybe, baby you got some
Compared to sky
Every thing is every where

Forum: Sports Posted: Sat Dec 04, 2010 12:36 am Subject: Why Portugal&Spain |
Nov 29 (Reuters) - Facts and figures relating to the joint Spain/Portugal bid to stage the 2018 World Cup finals:
Bid motto: “We play as a team, united by enthusiasm”
Why are they bidding?
Spain and Portugal believe it is their turn even though the former hosted the tournament in 1982 and Portugal staged the European Championships in 2004.
They argue that a century of soccer tradition and a friendly climate make them the ideal venue. Spain also feel it would be a just reward for their World Cup win in South Africa this year.
Best footballing moments:
Spain: Following up their coronation as European champions in 2008 to become world champions this year. They also won the 1964 European title.
Portugal: Reaching third place at the 1966 World Cup, their first appearance at the finals, and finishing runners-up on home soil at Euro 2004, although at the time that defeat to Greece was a huge disappointment.
Best-known footballers:
Spain: Argentinian-born Alfredo Di Stefano is regarded as the country’s best, even though he never appeared in a World Cup. Today’s greats include Iker Casillas, Carles Puyol, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, David Villa, Fernando Torres and Raul.
Portugal: Three World Player of the Year winners from three generations. Mozambique-born striker Eusebio led the side in 1966, Luis Figo was the star of the “Golden Generation” of the 1990s and Cristiano Ronaldo is currently the world’s most expensive player.
Previous World Cup performances:
Spain: 13 appearances, champions 2010
Portugal: Five appearances, third place in 1966.
Main stadiums for 2018:
Spain: Real Madrid’s 80,000-capacity Bernabeu stadium will likely host the final.
Portugal: The Luz Stadium in Lisbon with a capacity of 65,000.
Best points: The bid says the nations’ stadiums are among the world’s best in terms of comfort and security. It also highlights hotel infrastructure, which copes with millions of tourists every year, efficient transport networks and high-tech telecommunications.
Possible drawbacks: The bid may suffer from FIFA’s apparent reluctance to stage World Cups across two countries.
The financial crisis may lead to delays in building a high-speed rail link between the nations, seen as a key part of the infrastructure.
Legacy point: Bid officials say their World Cup would be directed towards making soccer “another driving force that can overcome barriers of exclusion, create a respect for difference and diversity, disseminate values of sustainability and, finally, create a tangible legacy in which fans can participate in true social development”.
What they say: Angel Maria Villar, Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) president, and Gilberto Madail, Portuguese soccer federation president: “We have the backing of millions of fans of this wonderful sporting spectacle.”
Population: Spain: 40.2 million. Portugal: 10.7 million.
Number of clubs:
Spain: 18,190, with 42 playing in the top two professional leagues.
Portugal: 2,226, of which 32 play in the two-tier professional league.
FIFA World Rankings: Spain: 1. Portugal: 8.
Trivia fact: Portugal knocked Spain out of Euro 2004 with a 1-0 win in Lisbon and Spain returned the favour in South Africa earlier this year with a 1-0 success in Cape Town. |

England has lost out to Russia in Fifa's vote on which country hosts the World Cup in 2018.
England Lose Race To Host 2018 World Cup
The England bid had taken over as bookies' favourites in the frantic build-up to the final vote.
But Fifa president Sepp Blatter has delivered a crushing blow to English hopes in Zurich and handed the world's largest country the chance to stage the tournament for the first time.
Confidence had been high among England's delegation - especially after a successful last-minute presentation earlier.
However, internet rumours began leaking out ahead of the announcement that Fifa had taken a different path.
It is thought England were knocked out in the first round of voting |

It has appealed primarily to an audience that prefers their music on the heavy metal, head-banging, hard rock side of things. This is a very strong showing for Avatar, especially when you take into account that it is December, and there was a massive winter snow along the east coast. Avatar's weekend box office gross was a little farther away from our Box Office Prediction of $86 million, than we would have hoped for, but we did not take into account the giant storm that hit the east coast of the United States. Otherwise, it's weekend gross probably would have been closer to our prediction. |

I believe college football to be much more fun to watch due to the great traditions and the intense gameplay. There is nothing like going to a college football game and standing in the student section. College football is better really due to the fact that it's more about the game, rather than the money, though the BCS would show otherwise. |
