Wow that's a tough choice. For me it came down to LL Cool J, NWA and Public Enemy. I picked NWA with LL Cool J coming in 2nd. I hate most of todays hip hop but it was awesome in the 80's and 90's. My favorite type of hip hop is G-Funk! West coast G-Funk forever!

The first hip hop cd I ever heard when I was a wee lad was Ice T--- Power. So I vote for him.

Back then hip hop tracks had a message almost political in nature. Today it just s........ doesn't sound as purty.

cant have a list with out D SCHOOLLY who in fact inspired NWA and many others in the early days of hiphop.

also Schoolly D does the Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Schoolly D - P.S.K. What Does It Mean? was the foot stone for NWA Boys From The Hood and the true first gangster rap years before them.
He also did the lyrics with little to no cursing. Dont see that today.

I dont see Nucleus in that list either.

So my choices are not listed.

K Day brought us hip hop music and the street traffic jam 1 hour mega mixes long before any other channels..

As Lonny said there are other artists that I left out but there are many more I could have included.....

Schoolly D
Nucleus
B.D.P.
D-Nice
Fresh 3MCs
Roxanne Shante
Slick Rick
Marley Marl
Twin Hype
K9 Posse
Chuck Chillout + Kool Chip
Dj Cash Money + MC Marvelous
Kid 'n' Play
Afrikka Bambaata
Hijack
Overlord X
Stetsasonic
2 Pac
B.I.G.

And there are even more than this...

But I only wanted to list the artists that I listened to the most.

I have always like DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. They had raps that everyone could listen to and they were fun.

NWA, definitely...run dmc & LL deserve all the credit in the world, but nwa started a whole new genre in hip hop...nwa, ice-t, ice cube changed the game with gangsta rap
