It looks like the PG-rated movie beat out the PG-13 rated movie this week as Night at the Museum 2 terminates Terminator Salvation.

The full article is at this site:

http://boxoffice.com/numbers/

Quote:
According to studio estimates, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian has easily won the 4-day Memorial Day weekend with a gross of $70 million. The adventure flick should grab $16.5 million today alone. The original Night at the Museum opened with $42 million during the Christmas holiday in 2006, which means that the franchise is obviously building a very solid following. Expect to see a Night at the Museum 3 in the not too distant future.

Die-hard Terminator fans could find no salvation in Terminator Salvation as the movie barely broke the $50 million mark even though it was the Memorial Day weekend:

Quote:
Despite being initially pegged to finish in first place this weekend, bad word of mouth caught up quickly with Terminator Salvation and according to studio estimates it will finish in second place with $53.8 million during the 4-day weekend. The previous film in the series, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, opened with $44 million domestically, which translates to around $52.4 million when adjusting for inflation. Salvation certainly hasn't added much momentum to the property, and it will have a difficult time maintaining its audience during the particularly competitive summer season.

For those Trekkers/Trekkies among us there was excellent news this weekend:

Quote:
Meanwhile, Star Trek was able to edge past last weekend's champ Angels & Demons in order to finish in third place with an estimated 4-day haul of $29.5 million, leaving it with a cume of more than $191 million. The sci-fi reboot should easily hit the $200 million mark early next weekend, making it the first film of the summer to do so.

The Star Trek film franchise will indeed live long and prosper! Very Happy

It's funny but part of the reason why movies make that much money is due to inflation from the ticket prices. This is why it seems so expensive to watch a movie and it is also why they seem to make more money now too. The reason why the movies seem to be making more money might also be because people consider spending vacations to be even more expensive!

Hey! This recession isn't the first time movies earned money. During the Great Depression back in the 1930s; many classic movies got made like King Kong, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Gone with the Wind, and the Wizard of Oz!

Movies will always do well whether people have money or not. It's a way to escape your life for a couple of hours and forget how crappy stuff is.

Are we talking about the same movie here? This is Terminator SALVATION we're talking about, right? Confused

Here is how Terminator Salvation compares to the previous three Terminator movies in terms of critical reviews courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes:

The Terminator - 100% (PERFECTION!!!)

Terminator 2:Judgment Day - 97% (nearly perfect!)

Terminator 3:Rise of the Machines - 70% (positive by a comfortable margin)

Terminator Salvation in contrast to the original trilogy is clearly inferior in every way with a mere 33% approval rating. There have also been 175 reviews counted so the approval rating will almost certainly stay the same too.

Terminator Salvation also did poorly with audiences since it finished second in its opening weekend. This means that both audiences and critics alike hate the movie! Rolling Eyes
