I was coming back from seeing Clash of the Titans when I saw a sign with all the movie ratings. The last one was NC-17. (no children under 17). I have never seen any movie advertisement for any movie rated this. Any of you ever see one? |

The funny thing was that according to my research; it was actually rated X in 1973, R in 1981, edited version rated X again in 1982 before it was finally rated NC-17 in 1997! |

Yep, it makes you wonder who is running the ratings system at the MPAA. A good documentary on the whole ratings system of the MPAA is the movie This Film is Not Yet Rated.
I suggest the above film because it is a humourous take on the MPAA ratings. Obviously the MPAA didn't like being criticized by the film so it was rated (you guessed it!) NC-17! |

Politicians runs the MPAA a democratic at that. Dan Glickman is his name I remember that cause he tried to bring down Pirate Bay over in Sweden. The owner did get jail time and had the site up in hours. Now their run independently world wide.
I think the rating system is a joke. I remember the day when movies were rated Pg, R, and x Ratings and some were dubbed with XXX which gave the impression that this xxx movie is harder then your x or XX movie. When technically their all the same. Now the rating system is confusing to me. _________________ Don't Google it, Just Bing IT!

I don't know; the MPAA has been around since 1922 so one can't place ALL the blame on the system to a guy who has only been chairman since 2004. Oh, and that name is outdated already; he stepped down as chairman as of the beginning of this very month!
Quote: | He is currently the Chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) but will be stepping down from his post on April 1, 2010 to become the new president of Refugees International. |
My best guess is that Bob Pisano took over for Dan Glickman. |

I did make a mistake but saying politicians instead of saying the MPAA is ran by a politician. Makes a big difference on what words one uses.
Didn't know he was suppose to step down good for him.
Bob Pisano never heard of him but from what I read briefly on him he sounds like a down to earth kind of guy. Doesn't mean much will change. _________________ Don't Google it, Just Bing IT!

the original directors cut of Scream was, then they cut out a little bit to get it to "R"
Predator 2 was originally NC17, then edited to R |

Yep, there have been a fair number of NC-17 rated movies over the years. The one that everyone references as to why NC-17 movies are never widely released is of course Showgirls which bankrupted Carolco Pictures. The good news for the ones who made that film was that it also became the highest-grossing NC-17 film on DVD.
Fortunately there have been at least 3 NC-17 films since that box office bomb which have redeemed the rating a bit in Boys Don't Cry, This Film is Not Yet Rated and 色,戒 Lust, Caution. |
