It was an extremely close contest between Cowboys & Aliens and The Smurfs this past weekend at the box office! I had to wait until the actual box office records were submitted before I could declare this race for either film.
Cowboys & Aliens beat out The Smurfs by less than a million dollars even though it was at more locations. Cowboys & Aliens made $36.4 million while The Smurfs earned $35.6 million.
Cowboys & Aliens didn't quite meet expectations given it had stars like Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig while The Smurfs definitely exceeded its modest expectations when it nearly topped the box office!
The list can be found at:

What did you think of any of the new movies opening this past weekend? What did you think of their box office grosses? |

I didn't think either would do well at all. Cowboys & Aliens? Really? As for The Smurfs they took them from the forest and dropped them in "the big city". Lame. _________________ Joe.Boxer |

I saw one on Saturday that briefly showed a cat and Gargamel pushing by some guy with a newspaper. Still a weak premise to have them, the Smurfs, in the city. Kids these days have no clue what the hell a Smurf is. I think it's only my generation that would have any memory of them and I sure as heck ain't going to see this movie. _________________ Joe.Boxer |

Hollywood is running out of good ideas. That's why there's so many remakes and sequels and whatnot. Thank god for Christopher Nolan who is my new favorite director not named Spielberg or Scorsese. _________________ https://www.facebook.com/groups/moviesnshows/?ref=bookmarks |
