My Dad and I had this great idea of how we could just feed the smaller birds i.e. chickadees, song sparrows, finches etc. in my backyard. I was getting annoyed at the larger birds coming down and taking over my bird feeders and the smaller birds weren't getting much to eat. We put our heads together and came up with this idea...What if we encased a regular bird feeder with a box and make one side of the box see through with chicken wire. See pic.
This way the smaller birds could get access to the food and it would keep the larger ones from getting to the seed. Well a couple weeks go by and it seems to be working great. I would come home from work and see the seed slowly going down. I thought this is great the smaller birds are getting some of the seed as well as the larger ones. Hooray! Or at least I thought. I came home from work today to find this  See pic

I don't quite understand the dynamics of this bird feeder. How did the squirrel get in there in the first place?

I think he just went through one of the holes. I checked to see if he had gnawed a hole anywhere else but couldn't find one. I know they have the ability to get into very small places. Their backbones are, for lack of the proper term, very flexible. I once seen one get run over by a truck and thought 'that's going to leave a mess' only to see him jump up and run off the side of the road. I think they could give cats a run for their money with how many lives they have! |

squirrels are like rats, they can get anywhere....and if they cant fit, they'll chew a hole to get in...i had them chew holes through the side of my house

That squirrel's head looks way too big to fit through any of those holes! He must have been really hungry.
