Gravity broke the October opening domestic weekend record with an estimated $55.55 million! This beats Paranormal Activity 3's record of $52.57 million back in 2011! Since this is just the estimate, it may be closer to the record when the actual figures arrive tomorrow.
Sandra Bullock and George Clooney must be celebrating wherever they are because this film's success represents the biggest opening film gross for either of them before inflation is taken into account!
The particularly promising thing about this movie is that it has rave reviews so more people may see it in the coming days and weeks. It also helps that the film only has a running time of 91 minutes!
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 held onto second place with a solid showing in its second weekend with an estimated $21.5 million!
The domestic box office estimates can be found at:

What did you think of Gravity? What did you think of the box office performances this weekend? _________________

I have not yet seen Gravity at the cinema,I saw the trailer and I'm lost in the space...I think it's a compelling film and very well done...is a film not to be missed, especially for overviews of the earth, space and of the aurora that are true.
In conclusion it is a well-deserved success and I'm going to see him |

Indeed! I completely agree with your assessment of the film and so did most audiences as Gravity repeated as the top grossing film THIS past weekend too!
I was surprised by its continued success as a new PG-13 drama showed up to challenge Gravity...
Captain Phillips exceeded expectations with its estimated $26 million domestic weekend but it still wasn't enough to wrest control of the top spot away from Gravity!

What did you think of any of the movies this weekend? How do you think they did? _________________

I'll definitely have to find some time to see this one. Once I find someone willing to go with me, of course. Not as much fun if I go and see it by myself.
If George Clooney is half as good in this one as he was in O Brother, Where Art Thou?, there's no doubt it's a great film. Even if, for the majority of the film, all you see is two dangling spacesuits. |

I kind of like George Clooney. He's one of those guys you think has been transported through time from the 50's, 'cos he just kind of looks like an old time actor... say perhaps Cary Grant?
Obviously he's not precisely the spitting image of Cary Grant, but he does have a similar old timer aura which kind of appeals to me.
Anyway, this film Gravity does look quite cool and I will hopefully watch it some time.
But I am really looking forward to Europa Report most of all. _________________

I agree, his acting style is very similar to that of Cary Grant. When I saw Arsenic and Old Lace for the first time, I couldn't help but think of George during various moments. I'm sure I noticed it in The Philadelphia Story as well when I saw it ever so long ago.
He also tends to play characters similar to Clark Gable's character Peter Warne in It Happened One Night. Maybe George watched a lot of classic Hollywood gems when he was younger? |

@ Garyoak
yea, you'll see that Gravity remains in "orbit" again for some time
I'm also curious to see Captain Phillips (Tom Hanks I really like as an actor) but I do not think will have the same success of Gravity!!
Because I like true stories ,really happened and thriller movies are intrigued by The Frozen Ground!
@Dr.Nurburg I saw Europa Report two months ago...is a documentary film, with a lot of tension from beginning to end..at times a little bit boring and a bit claustrophobic...anyway to be seen for those who love this kind of film |
